Downloadable - means you can save it to your hard drive and keep it.

WMV - file extension for Windows Media Format movies. These movies are designed for Windows Media Player. It is actually a very good compression format. Good quality with small file size. Requires Windows Media Player to play.

Mpeg - most common form of movie and probably the most preferred because it can be played on almost anything, though it is not necessarily the best format for getting high quality in a small file size.

DIVX - another way of encoding movie files. This method is probably the best for producing really clear movies, though you have to download the DIVX software in order to play them. DIVX movies will not stream. The have to be downloaded completely before they will play.

Streaming Movies - I use this term to mean movies that can't be downloaded - you click them, they play, but there is no way to download and save them movie. Though, technically, any movie that plays over the web while it is downloading is called streaming, whether you can save it or not.

Third Party Providers - Many movie sites these days get much of their content from other companies who provide adult content products. You see the same products on many adult websites. Examples are Hustler's Barely Legal Yearbook, Houston 500, or Doggy Style. Most offer streaming movies in a variety of bandwidths, but very few offer downloadable movies (Hustler does).

Software

Windows Media Player - pretty much the standard movie player. Get the latest version free. Needed to play .wmv files which are common on streaming movie sites. Plays mpegs and .avi movies well.

RealPlayer - another player for streaming movies. When you install it, you might want to tell it not to be  your default mpeg player. I think it is a lousy mpeg player. No need really to download it now, as any site you join that has realplayer movies will have a link to download the latest player. Also, latest free version contains Adware - you will get annoying pop-up ads after you install it.
